
James Robertson is theatre-maker and writer, born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, and now based in London, UK. Having written and/or directed over 15 productions, James' work has been staged around the globe.
Founding the Plain English Theatre Company in 2018, James has written, directed and produced numerous plays such as "Fisher" at Meat Market, "Have a Good Night, Walter" at La Mama and "Desire Lines" at Club Voltaire with the company. Other companies they have worked with in Melbourne include MU Modern, Four Letter Word, Melbourne University Comedy Review Board, Soul Theatre and 2050 Theatre.

James is a frequent collaborator of ProEnglish Theatre, the only English-speaking theatre company in Ukraine. They directed Neda Nezdhana's one-woman show "OTVETKA@UA" for Ukraine Fringe 2022 over Zoom, staged Nina Zakhozhenko's "Red Lipstick" in Melbourne and wrote the short play "No End" for their Theatre24 program.

James' one-person show "This is the One" was presented by Asterion Project Theatre in English at the Spinoza Szinhaz and they are a co-founder of Out of the Blue Improv, both in Budapest, Hungary.

They currently work as a freelance dramaturg, assisting multiple playwrights in London to develop their scripts for the stage.

They are an arts and culture journalist, having written reviews, interviews, columns and feature articles for Beat Magazine for 4 years. They currently write theatre reviews for Reviewshub and A Young(ish) Perspective.

They hold a BA majoring in Creative Writing and English & Theatre Studies from the University of Melbourne and an MA in Dramaturgy & Writing for Performance at Goldsmiths College, University of London
